Mike Mays
Head Coach

Coach Mike Mays has been with the Tennessee High football program since coming over from Volunteer High School in 1999. He coached the defensive backs and was Defensive Coordinator prior to being named Head Coach in 2013.  As Head Coach, Coach Mays also coaches the Outside Linebackers. Coach Mays played many sports at Farragut High School in Knoxville and was a four year letterman for the ETSU football team. He is married to Angie Mays and is the father of 2 boys, Michael and Mason. He is the former head wrestling coach, and now coordinates the strength and conditioning programs for all of the school's teams.  Coach Mays teaches Advanced Physical Education at Tennessee High.

Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks
Wally  Proffitt
Assistant Coach

Coach Wally Proffitt has been a coach for the Vikings for 20 years. Before being named the offensive coordinator, Coach Proffitt spent many years coaching quarterbacks and running backs.  He continues coaching quarterbacks.  Coach Proffitt is one of four coaches that are also former Tennessee High players, where he enjoyed a successfull career at quarterback and defensive back, graduating in '91. After high school, Coach Proffitt earned his Bachelor's Degree from ETSU and Master's Degree from Cumberland University. He and his wife Kara, also a Tennessee High graduate, are the parents of four children, Jackson, Nila, Rhaelyn, and Landry.   Coach Proffitt teaches Physical Education at Tennessee High. 

Defensive Coordinator and Inside Linebackers
Matt  Chandler
Assistant Coach

Coach Matt Chandler enters his 15th season with the Vikings. Coach Chandler was named Defensive Coordinator in 2013.  He continues to coach the inside linebackers. Before coming to Tennessee High, he spent seven years as Defensive Coordinator at Sullivan East and was the Head Coach at John Battle.  Coach Chandler graduated from Virginia High, where he played football.  After high school, Coach Chandler enjoyed a college football career at Emory and Henry College, where he was apart of 2 ODAC championship teams. Matt and his wife Tammy have two daughters, Hannah and Abbie. Coach Chandler teaches Driver's Education at Tennessee High.

Tony Adams
Assistant Coach

Coach Tony Adams has been a part of Tennessee High athletics for 17 years. Coach Adams is the ISS supervisor at Tennessee High.  Coach Adams has served as the Freshman Head Coach for the past several years.  He currently coaches the Wide Receivers . Coach Adams has also coached basketball and baseball for the Vikings.  In high school, Coach Adams was an All-State wide receiver at Sullivan East High School.  Coach Adams and his wife Becky have a daughter Laura Beth, a grandson Coleman, and a daughter Angie, who passed away in 2002.

Derek Dowdell
Assistant Coach

Coach Derek Dowdell has coached football at Tennessee High since 1996. In his 20 years, he has coached both the offensive line and running backs. He currently is the Offensive Line Coach for the Vikings.  In his playing days, Coach Dowdell was a running back at Greenbrier High School and Austin Peay State University. Coach Dowdell has a Bachelor's Degree and Master's Degree from the University of Tennessee. He teaches English at Tennessee High.   Coach Dowdell is married to Allison, and he is also the father of two boys, Trevor and Trent.

Daryl Shanks
Assistant Coach

Coach Daryl Shanks has been on the Vikings sideline for 19 years. Coach Shanks coaches the Defensive Tackles. Coach Shanks is a David Crockett High School graduate, where he played defensive tackle for Coach Wampler. While at David Crockett, Coach Shanks earned All-State honors.  Along with many of the other coaches, Coach Shanks is an ETSU alumni. He and his wife, Brooke, have two children, a daughter Taylor and a son Cooper  Coach Shanks teaches U.S. History at Tennessee High.

Brad Stubbs
Assistant Coach

Coach Brad Stubbs is in his 11th season on the sidelines of the Viking football team. Before coming to Tennessee High, Coach Stubbs spent three years with the Volunteer High School football team. Coach Stubbs is one of five former Viking players on the coaching staff. His Tennessee High playing career included time at quarterback, running back, and free safety, where he broke, the school record for tackles in a season. After his high school career, he moved on to letter three years for the ETSU football team. Brad is married to Amy Stubbs.  They have two daughters, Reagan and Gracie, and one son, Austin. Coach Stubbs teaches Special Education and is also the sprinters coach for the track team.

Mike Wampler
Assistant Coach

Coach Mike Wampler is in his 11th year on the Tennessee High coaching staff.  He currently coaches the running backs and special teams.  He has also spent time coaching the wide receivers at THS. Coach Wampler has 29 years of coaching experience.  He has served as Head Coach at Rye Cove and Sullivan North.  He has served as Offensive Coordinator at Anderson County, and has also coached at David Crockett, Gordonsville, and Happy Valley.  Coach Wampler is an alumnist of Sullivan North, ETSU, and Union College.  He has a daughter Emily, and a son Noah.  Coach Wampler teaches Physical Education at Tennessee High.

Trea Leonard
Assistant Coach

Coach Trea Leonard serves as the Defensive Ends Coach for the Vikings.   He rejoined the Viking Staff in 2015.  He previously coached at Tennessee High and Vance Middle School from 2001-2008 while working on his degree.  During that time, he worked at Strongwell and as an Educational Assistant.  From 2009-2014 Coach Leonard taught Social Studies and coached football at Volunteer High School.  Coach Leonard is one of five former Viking players on the current football coaching staff.  He enjoyed an outstanding career in football at THS.  Coach Leonard teaches Social Studies at Vance Middle School.  He and his wife Jessica have a daughter Goergia, and a son Cade.

John Ellis Davis
Assistant Coach

Coach Davis begins his third season coaching with the Vikings.  He is currently a student at East Tennessee State.  Coach Davis is one of five former Viking players on the staff.  He played Safety and Receiver for the Vikings.  He was a Senior on the 2009 11-1 team.  Coach Davis holds the record for most interceptions in a season at THS with 9 in 2009.  He went on to play football at Moorehead State.
