Tennessee High School will have the opportunity to expand project based learning experiences for students using a grant through the Knoxville TVA Employees Credit Union Foundation for Education. A foundation representative presented the SIMPLY SMART grant in the amount of $1,493.76 to Tennessee High School chemistry teacher Christy Johnson on Tuesday, February 7, at 1:00 p.m. at the school.
The grant was specifically awarded to purchase video cameras and accessories for use in the states of the matter unit in chemistry. “The states of matter unit begins with a picture of a train tanker that has imploded on itself,” Johnson said. “Students are given a scenario of the tanker being cleaned with steam the night before and having all the valves shut. When the workers returned the next morning they found the imploded tanker. Student groups are to produce a newscast to explain the implosion. Throughout the unit, they learn about the states of matter and how they change based on energy and forces of attraction. “
Congratulations, Mrs. Johnson!
